Training and exam

Exam: No exam is required to register. PTCB or NHA certification is required only for technicians who give vaccines, along with at least 2 hours of approved injection training, current BLS/CPR, and direct pharmacist supervision (Wis. Stat. 450.035(2h)).

What other sites get wrong about Wisconsin

Myth: Wisconsin pharmacy technicians do not pay a renewal fee.

Fact: DSPS lists a $30 renewal fee every two years, due May 31 of even-numbered years, plus a $25 late fee after expiration. source

Once you're registered

Renewal: Registrations renew every two years by May 31 of even-numbered years (next: May 31, 2028) for $30. Renewal opens about 4 weeks before expiration in LicensE. A $25 late fee applies after the expiration date, and the Board may suspend a registration that is not renewed on time. DSPS says there is no continuing education requirement for this credential. A person with an expired registration cannot reapply through the initial application.

Good to know in Wisconsin

Working while your application is pending: Under Phar 19.01(3), you may work as a technician before the Board acts on your application, but only under the direct supervision of a Wisconsin-licensed pharmacist.

Report changes within 10 days: Tell DSPS about a new home address or a new employer within 10 days, and a name change within 30 days. Employer changes are reported by support ticket in LicensE; no transfer fee is charged at this time.

What technicians cannot do: Technicians may not give final verification of a filled prescription (except as allowed under Phar 7.14), do drug utilization review, counsel patients, make therapeutic substitutions, or supervise other technicians.

Delivery drivers: A driver who only delivers prescriptions does not need to register as a pharmacy technician.
