Training and exam

Training: Oklahoma requires on-the-job training in a licensed Oklahoma pharmacy, run by the pharmacist manager or a pharmacist they designate. Phase I (orientation, pharmacy procedures) must be finished before you apply. Phase II (hands-on training with drugs) must be finished within 90 days after the permit is issued, or the pharmacy must notify the Board and the permit is automatically void. The Board's guidelines set minimum topics but do not list required hours.

Exam: There is no national exam. The pharmacist who trains you gives a written Board-provided technician exam (it may be open book) before approving your application, and the exam stays in your training file at the pharmacy. The Board relies on the pharmacy to decide a passing score. The Board's licensure requirements do not list PTCB or ExCPT certification.

What other sites get wrong about Oklahoma

Myth: The Oklahoma technician application must be notarized and include a passport photo.

Fact: The current OSBP application (November 2025) asks for a sworn signature under penalty of perjury, a Citizenship Affidavit and a copy of a state or federal ID. It does not ask for a notary or a photo. source

Once you're registered

Renewal: Permits expire every year on the last day of your birth month. Renewal is $40 and can be done online. You can renew only if you currently work in a licensed Oklahoma pharmacy under a licensed Oklahoma pharmacist. The fee doubles 15 days after expiration, and a permit not renewed is canceled 30 days after expiration. A canceled permit must be reinstated with a paper application ($80); you cannot apply for a new one. The Board does not list a continuing-education requirement for technician renewal; confirm with the Board.

Good to know in Oklahoma

Phase II deadline: If you do not finish Phase II training within 90 days of getting your permit, the pharmacy must tell the Board and your permit is automatically void and must be returned.

Working at more than one pharmacy: You must display your permit at each pharmacy where you work. Each additional pharmacy needs a duplicate permit at $10 each.

Canceled permits: Once a permit is issued and later canceled for any reason, you cannot apply for a new permit. You must file a paper reinstatement application ($80) after you are re-employed in a licensed Oklahoma pharmacy.

Technician ratio: Senate Bill 906 (effective November 1, 2025) limits licensed retail pharmacies to no more than four pharmacy technicians for every one licensed pharmacist.

Notify the Board of changes: The Board's technician exam cites rules requiring technicians to notify the Board in writing of address and employment changes (OAC 535:15-13-10).
