Training and exam
Training: Registered and certified technicians must complete one of: an employer-based training program meeting OAC 4729:3-3-02; an ASHP/ACPE-accredited program (including candidate status); a military, Indian Health Service or VA program; a Board-approved Ohio public high school career-technical program; a PharmD within the last 5 years; or 1 year as a pharmacist or intern in another state within 5 years. An employer-based program must include 300 hours of practical experience under a pharmacist's direct supervision and an exam of at least 90 questions with a passing score of at least 75% (OAC 4729:3-3-02).
Exam: No exam is needed for the trainee or registered technician levels. Certified pharmacy technicians must hold current PTCB (CPhT) or NHA (ExCPT) certification, which allows extra duties such as taking verbal prescription orders, prescription transfers and lab testing.

What other sites get wrong about Ohio
Myth: Ohio pharmacy technician licenses do not need to be renewed.
Fact: Registered and certified technician registrations must be renewed every two years (March 31 or September 30 of even years), and registered technicians must attest to 10 hours of CE. source
Once you're registered
Renewal: Registered and certified technicians renew every two years in eLicense Ohio for $65; no new background check is needed for renewal. Registered technicians must attest to 10 contact hours of CE, including at least 2 hours of pharmacy law (ACPE-03) and 2 hours of patient safety/medication errors (ACPE-05). Certified technicians upload proof of active PTCB or ExCPT certification and must keep it current. Expired registrations need a reinstatement application. Trainees who need more time apply for an 18-month reinstatement.
Good to know in Ohio
Three registration levels: Ohio registers technician trainees, registered technicians and certified technicians. Only certified technicians may take verbal prescription orders for non-controlled drugs, transfer prescriptions, call prescribers for clarification or do lab testing. Registered and certified technicians may give immunizations.
Transferring from another state: If you hold a technician license or registration in another state and worked at least one year as a technician in the last five years, you can upload the Board's reciprocity attestation instead of proof of training.
Upgrade at renewal: Registered technicians could upgrade to certified at no cost during the January 30 - March 31, 2026 renewal period (OAC 4729:3-2-03).
Support personnel: Some pharmacy tasks can be done by support personnel without a technician registration (OAC 4729:3-1-01).
High school trainees: Students in a Board-approved Ohio public high school technician program may register as trainees at age 17.
