Who can apply

  • Delaware does not license or register pharmacy technicians; the Board of Pharmacy lists no technician license or application.
  • You must work in a pharmacy under the supervision of a pharmacist (24 Del. C. § 2502).
  • Your employer must make sure you complete a training program within 90 days of starting work (24 Del. Admin. Code 2500-19.1).

Step by step

  1. Get a technician job at a Delaware pharmacy; no state application or fee is needed.
  2. Start the pharmacy's training program on your first day of work; until it is done, work only under direct supervision.
  3. Finish the training within 90 days; the pharmacy keeps documentation of your oral or written evaluation.
  4. Optional: pass the PTCB exam or another Board-approved national exam to become a certified pharmacy technician and take on extra duties.

Training and exam

Training: Pharmacy technicians must complete a training program that starts when employment begins and ends within 90 days. The pharmacist-in-charge sets the content for the practice site, covering areas such as drugs and dosage forms, medical terminology, calculations, labeling, dispensing, confidentiality, safety, inventory and state and federal law. The pharmacy keeps the program in its policy manual and documents successful training (24 Del. Admin. Code 2500-19.1). No hour minimum is set.

Exam: No exam is required to work as a technician. Only certified technicians (passed PTCB or another Board-approved national exam), or technicians who completed a Board-approved program in place of it, may reconstitute oral solutions, contact prescribers for refill authorization or help with compounding. Only PTCB- or NHA-certified technicians may give adult immunizations, after extra training.

What other sites get wrong about Delaware

Myth: Delaware pharmacy technicians must complete continuing education every 2 years and pay a renewal fee.

Fact: Delaware has no technician registration or renewal. The Board's rules require CE (2 hours every two years) only for certified technicians who give adult immunizations. source

Once you're registered

Renewal: There is no state technician registration to renew. Certified technicians who give adult immunizations must complete at least 2 hours of CE in that area every two years and keep a current CPR certification (24 Del. Admin. Code 2500-19.2.3).

Good to know in Delaware

Training before full duties: Once training has started, a technician in training may work only under direct supervision, meaning a pharmacist is present in the pharmacy at all times.

Certified technician alternative: A technician who completes a Board-approved training program instead of passing PTCB or another national exam may do certified-technician tasks except giving immunizations, but only in the approved setting; it does not transfer to another facility.

Immunizations: PTCB- or NHA-certified technicians may give adult immunizations under a pharmacist approved for injections, after a Board-approved academic and hands-on curriculum and with current healthcare-provider CPR certification.

Immunization law change (SB 320): SB 320, signed July 29, 2026, amends 24 Del. C. § 2502 so nationally certified pharmacy technicians who completed an accredited training program, are currently CPR-trained and have notified the Board of Pharmacy may give immunizations by prescriber order or protocol to patients 3 years and older. The Act took effect on signing, but implementation may be delayed up to one year while the Board writes regulations; until then follow the Board's current adult-immunization rule.
