Training and exam

Training: Kentucky sets no training program or hours for technician registration. Registered technicians who give vaccines or point-of-care tests must complete an ACPE-accredited practical training program with hands-on injection technique, hold current CPR certification and complete at least 2 hours of ACPE immunization CE each registration period.

Exam: No exam is required to register. A technician who passes the PTCB PTCE or NHA ExCPT and keeps that certificate current is recognized by the Board as a certified pharmacy technician (201 KAR 2:045).

What other sites get wrong about Kentucky

Myth: Kentucky pharmacy technicians must have a high school diploma or GED to register.

Fact: Kentucky law requires only that applicants be at least 16 and of good mental health and moral character, and pay the $25 fee; it sets no diploma requirement. source

Myth: In Kentucky, certified and non-certified technicians can perform the same duties; only the level of supervision differs.

Fact: Under 201 KAR 2:045 as amended October 22, 2025, certified technicians may be delegated tasks beyond the registered-technician list, such as transferring certain non-controlled prescriptions. source

Once you're registered

Renewal: Registrations expire March 31 every year; renewal opens February 1 and costs $25 through the Licensure Gateway. An expired registration is reinstated (not re-applied for as new) with the $25 fee plus a $25 delinquent fee. The technician regulation (201 KAR 2:045) sets no general CE hours for renewal; technicians who give vaccines need at least 2 hours of ACPE immunization CE each registration period.

Good to know in Kentucky

Working while your application is pending: You may assist in the practice of pharmacy for up to 30 days after your first day of employment if you have filed an application, unless the application is denied, you are under 16, or you had a registration denied, revoked or suspended elsewhere that has not been reinstated.

Registered vs. certified technicians: Since October 22, 2025, registered technicians work under immediate supervision on listed tasks, while certified technicians (current PTCB or NHA) may work under general supervision and be delegated any task except counseling, drug utilization review, interpreting orders, final product verification, taking new verbal orders, or other judgment calls.

Report changes: Notify the Board of a change of employer within 14 calendar days and of a legal name change within 30 days.

Expired registration: If you were registered before and your registration expired, use the reinstatement option in the Licensure Gateway instead of registering as a new technician.
