Training and exam

Training: Iowa sets no minimum training hours to register. Pharmacies must employ personnel who have documented training or education for the activities within their scope of practice (481 IAC 552.4). Certified technicians working in a telepharmacy under remote supervision first need at least 1,000 hours worked in an Iowa-licensed pharmacy and at least 160 hours of specified training.

Exam: National certification from PTCB (PTCE) or NHA (ExCPT) is required to register as a certified pharmacy technician. The Board expects trainees to earn it within the one-year trainee registration; one trainee renewal may be allowed only in exceptional circumstances. Certified technicians must keep certification active at all times, and the registration expires when the national certification expires. No separate state exam.

What other sites get wrong about Iowa

Myth: Iowa pharmacy technician applicants must have fingerprints taken for a criminal background check.

Fact: Iowa's fee table lists no background check fee (N/A) for technician trainees or certified pharmacy technicians; background check fees apply to pharmacists and certain businesses. source

Once you're registered

Renewal: Certified technicians renew for $40, generally every two years aligned with their national certification, and must keep PTCB or NHA certification active. A 30-day grace period follows expiration; you may keep working while a late application is pending but pay a late fee equal to the application fee. After the grace period you may not work until the registration is reactivated (fee four times the application fee). Technicians who give immunizations need immunization-specific CE.

Good to know in Iowa

Trainee limits: A trainee registration expires one year after it is issued. One renewal may be allowed only in exceptional circumstances, so plan to pass PTCB or NHA within the first year.

Working before you register: Working in the secure pharmacy area before you are registered can lead to public discipline.

Incomplete applications: Applications that stay incomplete for six months after the Board first receives them expire.

What certified technicians cannot do: Certified technicians cannot provide final prescription verification (except under approved programs), counsel patients, make judgment-based decisions, or transfer controlled-substance prescriptions.
