About the NCCCO Rigger Level I written exam
Rigger Level I is the national certification for the person who decides how a load is attached to the hook. It is open to anyone of working age — there is no degree requirement, no apprenticeship to finish first, and no years of documented experience to file — which makes it one of the few well-paid construction credentials you can go and earn on your own initiative. NCCCO publishes the written exam outline and weights it across four knowledge areas, and this bank follows that structure pool by pool so the practice you do maps onto the test you sit.
How to study for the Rigger Level I written exam
Start with the weights, because they tell you where your study time is worth most. NCCCO splits the written exam across four knowledge areas and publishes roughly what each is worth: execution of the rigging activity carries the largest share, inspection is the next largest, and scope of the rigging activity and technical knowledge divide the remainder. Read that the way a rigger would: the test is mostly about what you actually do with gear and whether that gear is fit to use, and comparatively little about reciting which standard says what. Candidates who fail usually do so by inverting that — memorising standard numbers and arriving thin on sling selection and removal criteria.
Learn the relationships rather than the tables. Three ideas carry an enormous number of questions between them: a choker hitch is rated below the same sling's vertical rating because of how the sling bends and grips; a basket hitch gains capacity only while its legs stay near vertical and gives that gain back as they open out; and the tension in a sling leg climbs as the angle to horizontal drops, which is why a shallow, nearly-flat sling angle is the classic way to overload gear that looked perfectly adequate. None of these depend on a number you have to look up, none of them change when a manufacturer revises a catalogue, and together they let you reason your way through capacity questions you have never seen before.
Treat inspection as a decision, not a checklist. The exam rarely asks you to recite a list of defects; it describes a piece of gear in a particular condition and asks what you do about it. So study each material by the question the job actually asks: given this chain with this much stretch, this wire rope with broken wires here, this synthetic sling with this cut, this hook with this much throat opening — does it stay in service, and if not, what happens to it so nobody else picks it up? Get comfortable with the difference between the look you give gear before every use and a documented periodic inspection, and with who is qualified to do which. A missing or unreadable identification tag is its own answer in a surprising number of questions.
Finally, practise the parts of the job that happen before and after the lift, because they are heavily tested and easy to skip. Before: where a trustworthy load weight comes from and what you do when you cannot get one, how to find the attachment points and judge where the centre of gravity lies, what along the travel path could catch the load, and the fact that you may stop the lift. After: landing the load on blocking that will hold it, making sure it is stable before the rigging comes off, getting the gear out safely and stowing it. Work in all three languages if you can — reading the same rule in English, Chinese and Spanish is a real comprehension check, and on a crew where instructions pass between languages it is a skill the job pays for.

Do I need experience to sit the Rigger Level I exam?
No. NCCCO's published eligibility for rigger certification is that you be at least 18, comply with its substance abuse policy and its code of ethics, and pass the examinations. There is no degree requirement, no prior credential and no documented-hours requirement — which is unusual for a construction certification and is why career-changers can target it directly. Level II is the one that expects a more experienced rigger; Level I is the entry credential. Employers will still expect you to have handled gear, and the practical exam will find out whether you have.
Does this practice bank cover the practical exam too?
No, and it is important to be clear about that. Rigger Level I certification has two halves: a written examination and a hands-on practical examination in which you actually rig and move a load. Everything here is aimed at the written half, because that is what a multiple-choice bank can honestly prepare you for. Nothing on a screen will teach you to judge a sling angle by eye, to feel a load settle, or to keep your hands and body clear while gear takes the strain. Use this to get the knowledge solid, and get supervised time with real slings, shackles and hardware for the rest.
How is this different from the crane operator practice test?
They are two different jobs on the same lift, and the site has a separate bank for each. The crane operator runs the machine: load charts, radius and boom length, outriggers and ground bearing, operational aids, and the capacity deductions that decide whether the lift is on. The rigger decides how the load gets attached and controlled: what it weighs and where its centre of gravity is, which sling material and hitch to use, whether the hardware is fit to use or must be rejected, and how the load is kept under control from pick to set. This bank stays on the rigger's side of that line on purpose — you will not find load-chart questions here, and the crane bank does not go deep on sling inspection.
Why do so many questions avoid giving capacity numbers?
Because a memorised capacity is not just useless on the job, it is dangerous. What a sling or shackle can take depends on its material, its size, its condition, the hitch you are using and the angle the legs hang at — which is why every piece of gear carries its own identification tag. A question that rewards you for recalling a number from a table trains exactly the wrong habit. So where a capacity or an angle matters here, the question gives you the figure and asks you to apply it, the way the job does: read the tag, do the arithmetic, decide. What you should carry in your head is the relationships — what a choker does to a rating, what happens to leg tension as the angle flattens — and those never change.
How much of the exam is inspection?
A large share of it, and more than most candidates expect. NCCCO's published outline puts inspection at roughly 30 percent of the written test and execution of the rigging activity at roughly 42 percent, with scope of the rigging activity and technical knowledge making up the rest. That means knowing what to look for on a chain, a wire rope, a synthetic sling, a hook and a shackle — and knowing what condition means the gear comes out of service rather than gets used one more time — is worth nearly a third of your score on its own.
