The trades that keep houses standing and dry are among the last well-paid careers you can enter without a degree, and the credential that opens them is almost always an exam rather than a diploma. Home inspection is the clearest example: it sits at the point where structure, roofing, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems all meet, it rewards someone who can explain why a building is failing rather than merely notice that it is, and it can be entered mid-career by anyone who already knows one of those trades well.

What makes this material worth learning properly is that the physics does not change. Water runs downhill and finds the one unsealed lap in a wall assembly; warm humid air moves toward cold dry air and condenses when it gets there; a bending member loses far more strength to a notch cut in the wrong place than the size of the notch suggests; a trap holds sewer gas back only as long as its water seal survives. Dimensions and thresholds are set by codes that revise on a cycle and vary by jurisdiction, but the mechanisms behind them hold everywhere and for decades, so that is what these questions test.

Job sites and inspection routes run on multilingual crews, and the technical vocabulary is the slowest part to pick up in a second language — flashing, weep, backdraft, hydrostatic, vapour retarder.
