  1. 1. During an engine oil and filter change with a spin-on filter, what must be confirmed at the filter mounting flange before the new filter goes on?

    If the old filter's gasket stays behind on the flange, the new filter seals against two stacked gaskets. The doubled seal cannot hold oil pressure, blows out, and empties the crankcase in seconds. The new seal is wiped with clean oil and the filter is hand-tightened to the instructions printed on it.

    The test asks one question: does the system hold the pressure it is designed to see in service? That ceiling is the cap's own rating, which is why the cap is the reference. Pumping beyond it can split a hose, rupture the heater core or damage the radiator, creating a leak the vehicle did not have.

    Verifying the concern comes before any repair decision.     A pocket of air is compressible and carries almost no heat.     Both statements describe standard practice. A refractometer reads the mixture's refractive index and converts it to freeze and boil protection, and it is unaffected by fluid temperature the way a float hydrometer can be. Test strips react chemically to pH and inhibitor level, which is how a coolant that is still the correct strength but chemically worn out gets caught.

    A belt is condemned on its condition, not on its age or accumulated mileage. Missing rib material, ply separation or exposed cords mean the belt can no longer transmit torque reliably and may come apart in service. Glaze on the back side and dust in the grooves are noted but are not by themselves failures; rib wear is measured with the wear gauge made for that belt profile.

    The sensing element has to sit in engine-side coolant so it responds to engine temperature, and the housing's vent or jiggle valve has to be clocked where the manufacturer specifies so air can escape as the system fills. Substituting sealant for a designed gasket changes the sealing thickness and can squeeze into the coolant passage.

    A seep that only opens under heat and pressure closes up cold, and any escaped coolant evaporates and leaves the area dry, so a cold visual check misses it. That is exactly why the system is put under pressure with a tester or traced with dye: the dye circulates with the coolant and glows at the exit point under a UV lamp, marking leaks too small to see as wetness.

    A paper element is replaced on condition — restriction, damage or a failed seal — and surface dust is normal service appearance, not a failure. Compressed air and solvent tear the media fibers open and let dirt straight through afterward. Dirt that bypasses a poorly seated housing reaches the airflow sensor and the cylinders.

  12. 12. Crankcase ventilation components are being serviced at a scheduled maintenance. Which practice is correct?

Leaving the port open or plugging the breather unmeters that path, so unfiltered air and oil vapor reach the intake and moisture and sludge stay in the crankcase.

Abrasives and soaking ruin the bore coating and the sensor.

    Pre-gapped plugs can be supplied off the vehicle's specification or knocked out of gap in handling, so each is checked with the proper gauge against the figure in the service information. Torque is not optional: the plug's seat is how combustion heat leaves the electrodes into the head, so an undertightened plug runs hot and can loosen, while an overtightened one strips aluminum threads or distorts the plug shell.

  16. 16. After a cooling system service, how is the operation of an electric cooling fan verified?
