About the ASE G1 Test
Auto Maintenance and Light Repair (G1) is the entry point into ASE certification, and it is a different test from the A-series specialist exams rather than an easier version of them. G1 covers the whole vehicle — engine systems, drivetrain, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical and climate control — but always at the maintenance technician's altitude: what you inspect, how you service it, what measurement condemns a part, what you verify before the vehicle leaves, and where light repair ends and a specialist takes over. It is the test most shops point a new technician at first.
How to study for the ASE G1 test
The single most common way to lose points on G1 is to answer it like a diagnostic test. If you have been studying for A5 or A6, or you simply enjoy chasing faults, the instinct is to read every stem as a puzzle with a hidden cause. G1 is not built that way. It asks what a competent technician does on a routine job: which condition makes a part unserviceable, what the correct sequence of a service is, what gets torqued and in what pattern, what must be bled or reset or relearned afterwards, and what you check before the vehicle goes back to the customer. When two answers both look defensible, prefer the one that describes correct procedure over the one that describes clever deduction.
Spend your time where the test does. Suspension and steering is the largest content area at about a quarter of the questions, and brakes is next at about a fifth — together they are close to half the test, and both are areas where the work is highly proceduralised and therefore very learnable. Engine systems and electrical come next, then the drivetrain areas and climate control. Learn the two ASE question formats before test day, because they cost points purely through unfamiliarity. In a Technician A / Technician B item, judge each statement completely on its own and only then combine the verdicts; the answer is neither more often than nervous candidates expect, and letting one obviously wrong statement colour your reading of the other is the classic way to miss one. In an EXCEPT item, three options are true and you are hunting the one that is not, so read all four against the stem instead of stopping at the first that sounds right. Finally, stop trying to remember numbers and start remembering procedures and boundaries. Nobody on the shop floor recalls a discard dimension or a torque sequence from memory across every vehicle they touch, and the test does not expect it either — what it expects is that you know a specification governs the job, that you know how the measurement is taken, and that you know what an out-of-spec reading obliges you to do. The other half of that habit is the referral boundary: a large part of being good at maintenance work is recognising the moment a job has stopped being light repair and belongs to a specialist, a diagnostic technician, or someone holding a refrigerant certification. Questions that seem to be about a component are often really about that judgment.

What is the difference between the ASE G1 test and the A-series tests?
They test different jobs, not different difficulty levels. The A-series tests — engine repair, brakes, electrical, suspension and steering, engine performance and the rest — are diagnostic exams: a question hands you a symptom and a test result and asks what it means or what to check next. G1 is the maintenance and light repair test: it asks what you inspect, how you perform a service correctly, what measurement makes a component unserviceable, and what you verify afterwards. A technician can be excellent at G1 work and still need to study hard for A5, because the reasoning the two tests reward is not the same. Most people start with G1 and add A-series certifications as they specialize.
Do I need work experience to become ASE certified?
Yes — ASE certification requires both passing the test and documenting relevant hands-on work experience, and that is true of G1 as it is of the other tests. The important detail for people starting out is that appropriate vocational training may count toward part of the experience requirement, so a student coming out of a training program is often closer to the threshold than they expect. You can sit the test before the experience is complete; the certificate follows once ASE has both. Check the current requirement with ASE directly, because the documentation process is the part most likely to have changed since any study guide you are reading.
Is the ASE G1 test available in Spanish?
G1 is unusual among ASE tests in this respect: ASE provides a Spanish option for it, letting a candidate call up a side-by-side Spanish and English rendering of the question and its answer choices, with no separate registration. A Spanish and English glossary can also be opened during ASE tests generally. That makes Spanish study genuinely useful for this test rather than just a convenience — you will meet the English terms on test day, but you can reason in Spanish while you do. Do I have to memorize torque specs and clearances for the G1 test?
No, and trying to would be the wrong preparation. Torque values, clearances, running pressures, fluid capacities, discard dimensions and service intervals are set by the vehicle manufacturer and differ from model to model and year to year, which is exactly why a technician looks them up rather than remembering them. What the test rewards is knowing that a specification exists, where it comes from, what the measurement procedure is, and what to do when the reading falls outside it. What is a Technician A / Technician B question?
It is the item format ASE is best known for. Two technicians each make a statement about the same situation, and the four choices are always the same: A only, B only, both, or neither. The trap is treating it as one question. Read the scenario, then decide whether statement A is true on its own, ignoring B entirely; then do the same for B; only then combine your two verdicts into an answer. Candidates lose these by letting a plainly wrong statement colour their reading of the other one, or by assuming the answer is rarely neither. The other ASE format worth recognising is the EXCEPT question, where three options are true of the situation and you are looking for the one that is not — slow down and check each option against the stem rather than picking the first that sounds right.
