About the FAA private pilot knowledge test

The private pilot certificate is the licence most people mean when they say they are learning to fly, and the knowledge test — the "written" — is the part you can study for on the ground, months before you are ready for the checkride. The subjects it covers are set out in federal regulation rather than in a syllabus that changes each year: 14 CFR 61.105(b) lists the aeronautical knowledge a private pilot applicant must have, and everything on this page is organised around that list. These practice pools are free, and every question appears in English, Chinese, and Spanish.

How to study for the private pilot written

Start with the regulations and the airspace system, because everything else leans on them. Almost every scenario question eventually reduces to two questions: am I allowed to do this, and what does this airspace require of me and my aeroplane? Learn the classes of airspace as a set of entry requirements — what certificate, what equipment, what communication, what weather minimums — rather than as shapes on a chart, and the rest of the subject organises itself. When a question here turns on a regulation, the question names it, so you learn where the rule lives as well as what it says.

Treat weather as physics rather than vocabulary. It is the subject that most often decides whether a flight is safe, and it is where memorising definitions fails fastest. If you understand why a parcel of air that keeps rising in unstable conditions builds a thunderstorm, why the spread between temperature and dew point predicts fog and cloud bases, and why a microburst produces a performance-increasing shear followed by a performance-decreasing one, then the reports and forecasts become descriptions of a situation you can already picture. Our weather questions quote the decoded elements they depend on, so you practise the reasoning rather than the format.

Do the arithmetic by hand until it stops being arithmetic. Weight and balance, density altitude, the wind triangle, crosswind components, fuel and time for a leg — these are a large, reliable share of the test, and they are the questions you can be certain of getting right, because nothing about them is a matter of judgement. Every computational question in this bank supplies all of its own values in the stem, so you can work each one end to end without a chart supplement. Do them until you recognise the shape of the problem before you reach for the formula.

Finally, separate what is durable from what is on a cycle, because they call for different study habits. The aerodynamics, the weather theory, the structure of the airspace system and the codified requirements of parts 61 and 91 change slowly, and that is what this bank teaches. Chart editions, weather product formats, airport data, your aeroplane's performance numbers and the current medical rules do change, and those you look up — every time, from the current official source, for the actual flight. A good pilot is not someone who has memorised the data; it is someone who knows which things must be checked afresh.

FAQ

Do I need an instructor endorsement to take the knowledge test?

Yes — this is the one real gate on the private pilot written, and it surprises people. You must present either an endorsement from an authorized instructor stating that you have completed the required ground training and are prepared for the test, or evidence that you finished an accepted ground school or home-study course. It is a training authorization rather than an education requirement: there is no degree involved, and you do not need to have started flight lessons. Confirm the current acceptable forms of authorization with the FAA or your instructor before you book.

What does the written test actually cover?

The regulation lists the areas directly: the federal aviation regulations that govern private pilot privileges and limitations, the national airspace system, weather and the reports and forecasts that describe it, navigation by pilotage, dead reckoning and navigation systems, radio communication procedures, aerodynamics and aeroplane systems, the effects of density altitude on performance, weight and balance computation, stall and spin awareness, aeronautical decision making, and the preflight action a pilot owes each flight. Is passing the written the same as getting the certificate?

No. The knowledge test is one of three things you must complete, alongside the flight training and experience requirements and the practical test — the checkride — which includes an oral examination and a flight with an examiner. A multiple-choice bank like this one can prepare you thoroughly for the written and can genuinely help with the oral, because the examiner probes the same knowledge. It cannot teach you to fly the aeroplane, and it is not meant to. Treat a strong score here as clearing one of the three, not as being close to done.

Why are there no sectional charts or instrument pictures in these questions?

Deliberately. Every situation here — a segment of airspace, a chart symbol, an instrument indication, a traffic geometry, a performance table — is described in words completely enough to answer from the text alone. There are two reasons. The practical one is that charts and data are republished on a cycle, so a bank built around a particular chart excerpt goes stale and starts teaching the wrong thing. The better reason is that putting the situation into words forces you to understand what the depiction MEANS rather than pattern-matching a picture, which is what the examiner will ask you about anyway. Practise with a current chart alongside this bank, not instead of it.

How is this different from the Part 107 drone test?

They share a surprising amount of ground — airspace classes, weather products, and aeronautical decision making appear on both — but they are different certificates for different aircraft. The Part 107 remote pilot certificate governs small unmanned aircraft and tests the rules specific to them, including remote identification and the operating limitations on drone flights. The private pilot certificate is about flying an aeroplane with people in it: pilot privileges and currency, aircraft airworthiness, the weather minimums and equipment a pilot needs to enter a given airspace, aeroplane systems, performance and weight and balance. We keep a separate Part 107 bank, and the two are scoped so they do not repeat each other.
