Not everything in the air is unmanned. The private pilot certificate is the licence most people mean when they say they are learning to fly, and its knowledge test is the part you can study on the ground long before the checkride — regulations, airspace, weather, aerodynamics and systems, navigation, performance and weight and balance. The mechanics who keep those aeroplanes airworthy sit their own written exams. Whatever your seat, the subjects below are the ones the FAA actually tests.

Flying a drone for any purpose beyond personal recreation puts you under federal aviation rules, and the FAA's Part 107 remote pilot certificate is what those rules require. It opens the door to paid work in real estate photography, roof and infrastructure inspection, surveying and mapping, agriculture, and video production — fields where the certificate is the difference between a hobby and an invoice.

Unlike most licenses, this one is a single knowledge test — there is no flight check and no requirement to own an aircraft first. What it does demand is real aeronautical knowledge: how the National Airspace System is layered, how to read a sectional chart and convert between height above the ground and altitude above sea level, how to decode a METAR, what density altitude does to a loaded aircraft, and how a crew keeps an aircraft in sight and reacts when a link is lost.

The other way into aviation is through maintenance rather than the cockpit. The FAA's airframe and powerplant mechanic certificate is what lets someone work on certificated aircraft and sign that the work was done correctly, and it is one of the few well-paid technical careers still earned through an examination and documented experience rather than a degree. It is taken in pieces: a General written test that every candidate sits, an Airframe and a Powerplant written test, and then an oral and practical exam. The General section is the shared foundation — the regulations that define what a mechanic may approve, maintenance records, basic electricity, weight and balance, materials and corrosion, ground handling, and human factors.

Because the rules are federal, what you study applies in every state — a rare thing among the licenses on this site, and the reason the material stays worth learning properly. An FAA knowledge test is one milestone inside a longer certification path, and knowing where it sits helps you plan. Private pilot candidates take the written alongside flight training, usually with an instructor's endorsement, and the result feeds into the final practical test, where examiners revisit any weak areas — so a strong written score quietly makes the checkride easier. Mechanic candidates must establish eligibility through documented experience or an approved school before testing, and the three writtens are commonly spread across months of preparation. Remote pilot candidates reach their certificate fastest, which makes Part 107 a common first step into aviation. In every case the exam is taken at an authorized testing center, not online at home, so plan the trip into your schedule.

The four banks serve different readers. The Part 107 bank (109 questions) fits someone who wants to fly drones commercially and has no other aviation background. The Private Pilot bank (153 questions) supports flight students working through ground school in parallel with lessons. The two mechanic banks divide the way the A&P writtens do: General (108 questions) carries the shared fundamentals, while the Airframe bank is the largest and most granular — 199 questions across eleven pools, one per aircraft system, from metallic and non-metallic structures through hydraulics, landing gear, flight controls, instruments, fuel, fire protection, ice and rain protection, and inspection. A mechanic candidate can therefore study exactly the system a weak practice score exposes instead of rereading a whole textbook.

FAA writtens mix recall with calculation, and the calculation questions are where preparation pays fastest: weight-and-balance problems, density-altitude effects on performance, fuel and time computations for pilots, and unit conversions for mechanics. These reward a fixed written procedure — the same table sketched the same way every time — because errors come from setup, not arithmetic. Many questions also hang on interpreting something visual, whether a performance chart, a sectional chart, or a wiring diagram, so slow down on any question that references a figure. Use the per-section pools to master one subject at a time, let the explanations teach the underlying rule rather than the specific numbers, and finish with timed mocks to build the pacing a proctored test demands.
