This is ASVAB word knowledge. One of the four behind your AFQT score, the score that decides whether you qualify to enlist. Let's work through 12 real vocabulary questions. Try to answer each one before I do.
Word knowledge tests one thing. Do you know what a word means? You get a word and four choices pick the one closest in meaning. Strategy, think of your own synonym first, then find the match and eliminate the opposites.
Number one, abate. Does it mean intensify, diminish, delay or confuse? To abate is to lessen in force or intensity, a storm abates as it weakens. The answer is diminish.
Number two, candid. Hostile, secretive, cautious or frank. Candid means open and honest with nothing hidden. The answer is frank.
Number three, meager. Scanty, heavy, wealthy or abundant. Meager means thin and lacking, not enough to go around. The answer is scanty.
Number four, novice. An expert, a teacher, a beginner or a leader. A novice is someone brand new to an activity. The answer is a beginner.
Number five, vigilant. Careless, tired, cheerful or watchful. Vigilant means alert and watching for danger. The answer is watchful.
Number six, frugal. Wealthy, wasteful, generous or thrifty. Frugal means careful and sparing with money. The answer is thrifty.
Number seven, concise. Lengthy, brief, detailed or unclear. Concise means saying a lot in just a few words. The answer is brief.
Number eight, diligent. Clumsy, lazy, hardworking or careless. Diligent means putting in steady, careful effort. The answer is hardworking.
Number nine, obscure. Unclear, obvious, bright or famous. Obscure means hard to see or hard to understand. The answer is unclear.
Number 10, deter. Permit, encourage, discourage or assist. To deter is to hold someone back, usually through fear or doubt. The answer is discourage.
Number 11, conceal. Hide, reveal, display or announce. To conceal is to keep something out of sight. The answer is hide.
Number 12, prudent. Cautious, hasty, reckless or foolish. Prudent means showing good judgment and thinking ahead. The answer is cautious.
Three quick habits for word knowledge. Think of your own synonym before you read the choices. Use prefixes and roots when a word is unfamiliar and cross off any answer that means the opposite. It's a short, timed section so a fast, confident pace pays off.
