Soil pH matters because it governs nutrient availability: outside the range turfgrass prefers, applied nutrients become chemically bound and the plant cannot take them up, so more fertilizer does not fix a pale lawn. Lime raises pH on acid soil and elemental sulfur lowers it on alkaline soil; gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur but does not change pH.

Excess nitrogen, low soil biological activity, compaction and unfavourable pH all tip that balance; leaf clippings are mostly water and decompose quickly, so returning them does not create thatch.

Catching it at this stage allows irrigation before the turf browns, and it appears first on slopes, sandy spots and areas nearest heat-radiating pavement.
