About the Home Health Aide (HHA) competency exam

The Home Health Aide (HHA) competency exam checks that an aide can safely care for clients in their own home. Under the federal rule 42 CFR 484.80, it covers the core competency areas: personal care, home safety and emergencies, and communication and client rights. Most people take it after a training program, as a step toward working for a home health agency. This free practice test lets you study the same topics in English, Chinese, or Spanish, at your own pace, so the language of the exam is one less thing to worry about.

What the HHA exam covers

Personal care in the home is the heart of the job. An aide helps clients with everyday activities such as bathing, grooming, dressing, using the toilet, and moving safely from a bed to a chair. Good care means protecting the client's skin and comfort, encouraging them to do what they still can for themselves, and keeping everything clean to prevent infection. Because you work in someone's own home, you also learn to respect their routine, their space, and their belongings.

Home safety and emergencies teach you to spot dangers before they cause harm. That means keeping walkways clear to prevent falls, handling hot water and appliances carefully, storing medicines and cleaning products safely, and washing your hands the right way. You also learn how to react calmly in an emergency, when to call 911, and how to report a fire, a bad fall, or a sudden change in the client's condition to your supervising nurse or agency.

Communication and client rights shape how you treat every person you serve. You learn to listen carefully, speak clearly, and observe changes so you can report them accurately. Clients have the right to be treated with dignity, to have their privacy and personal information protected, and to take part in decisions about their own care. Being kind, patient, and respectful of a client's culture and language is part of doing the job well.

It helps to know what an aide may and may not do. An aide provides personal care, helps with mobility and simple daily tasks, and reminds clients to take medicine that they take themselves. An aide does not diagnose, does not decide on or change medications, and does not perform tasks that a licensed nurse must do. When something is outside your role or you are unsure, the right move is always to stop and report to your supervising nurse or agency. Remember that state requirements vary, and this practice is study support, not medical advice.
