Training and exam
Training: Rhode Island's Municipal Police Training Academy trains and certifies all municipal police officers except those of the city of Providence. A basic recruit session runs about 20 weeks. Final exams cover criminal law, motor vehicle law, crash investigation, patrol, report writing, domestic violence/sexual assault, crime scene investigation, radar/laser and DUI enforcement. State law requires all recruits to be certified in Mental Health First Aid, Crisis Intervention Team training, or other IACP-recognized best-practice training.
Exam: Your grade average must be at least 70%. Certification exams and practical skills assessments (OC spray, impact weapons, firearms, EVOC, water rescue, First Aid/CPR/AED, physical training, arrest tactics and others) are pass/fail at 70%. If you fail a make-up attempt you cannot be certified. Entrance fitness standards for men 20-29: 300-meter run in 59 seconds, 38 sit-ups in one minute, bench press 0.99 of body weight, 1.5-mile run in 12:29 (women 20-29: 71 seconds, 32 sit-ups, 0.59 ratio, 15:05). To graduate you must finish a two-stage physical abilities course in 3:02 and 1:19, plus 300-meter and 1.5-mile runs at the 50th percentile (men 20-29: 56 seconds and 11:58).

Good to know in Rhode Island
Sponsorship required: You cannot enroll in the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy on your own. A department must hire you as a probationary officer and request your seat.
Providence is separate: The state Municipal Police Training Academy trains and certifies municipal officers except those of the city of Providence, and the Commission's mandatory training standards do not apply to Providence.
Fitness entrance test: The entrance battery is a 300-meter run, sit-and-reach, one-minute sit-ups, one-rep max bench press and 1.5-mile run. If you miss any standard you are disqualified from entering that class. The fitness assessment for a session may be held only once, without make-up dates.
