Who can apply
- Ohio has no state license for medical assistants. Physicians delegate tasks to unlicensed persons under R.C. 4731.053 and OAC Chapter 4731-23.
- Before delegating, the physician must determine that you are competent to perform the task (OAC 4731-23-02(B)(5)).
Step by step
- Finish a medical assisting program or get employer training. Ohio does not require a specific program.
- Optionally earn a national certification (CMA-AAMA, RMA-AMT, CCMA-NHA or NCMA-NCCT). Ohio does not require one.
- If you will take x-rays, complete an ODH-accredited general x-ray machine operator (GXMO) program and clinical modules, pass the Ohio GXMO exam, and get the ODH license before operating x-ray equipment.
- Perform only tasks a physician delegates to you after deciding you are competent; drug administration needs the physician on site.
Training and exam
Training: No state-mandated medical assistant program. The delegating physician must determine you are competent for each task and may not delegate a task beyond your competence (OAC 4731-23-02, 4731-23-03). For drug administration, the Board's rules must address training and competency (R.C. 4731.053(C)). The GXMO x-ray license requires an ODH-accredited education program.
Exam: No state exam to work as a medical assistant; national certification is voluntary. To operate x-ray equipment you need the ODH general x-ray machine operator license, which requires passing the Ohio examination for that category (OAC 3701-72-02).

Good to know in Ohio
What a medical assistant can do in Ohio: A physician may delegate a task to an unlicensed person if the task is within the physician's authority, is indicated for the patient, can be done without judgment based on medical knowledge, has reasonably predictable results, and would not have life-threatening consequences if done improperly (OAC 4731-23-02). When a physician delegates drug administration, the physician must provide on-site supervision (present at the location, not necessarily in the same room), with narrow exceptions such as routine topical drugs.
What a medical assistant cannot do: A physician may not delegate to an unlicensed person the administration of anesthesia, controlled substances or intravenous drugs (OAC 4731-23-03(F), R.C. 4731.053(D)(3)), except for narrow statutory carve-outs. You may not re-delegate a task to someone else, and a physician cannot delegate a task beyond your competence. The supervising physician stays responsible for how the task is done.
X-ray: Ohio requires a license from the Ohio Department of Health to work as a general x-ray machine operator (R.C. 4773.02). Requirements: age 18 or older, an ODH-accredited education program, competency-based clinical training modules, and a passing score on the Ohio exam for the category. The license costs $65, expires every two years on your birthday, renews for $45, and requires 12 continuing education credits per renewal (OAC 3701-72-02).
