Who can apply

  • Certification is voluntary: the Wyoming Firefighters Voluntary Certification Program has run since 1980 and is accredited by Pro Board.
  • Candidates must be members of a Wyoming fire department, fire service organization, recruitment program, fire service affiliated organization or approved education program. People not affiliated with a department can still earn Firefighter I through a program approved by the Certification Committee and DFPES.
  • Minimum age, physical fitness and medical requirements are set by the local department (the authority having jurisdiction), not the state.
  • Firefighter I prerequisites: Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certification and a cancer awareness course.

Step by step

  1. Join a Wyoming fire department or other fire service organization and complete its entrance requirements.
  2. Complete ICS-100 and IS-700, and earn Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certification (70% on each written exam). IS-200 is required later, for Firefighter II.
  3. Train to the Wyoming Firefighter I standard (NFPA 1010, 2024 edition) and complete the Training Record (hands-on practicals) and the cancer awareness course.
  4. Your fire chief or training officer schedules the exams and sends an exam request to the DFPES Certification Coordinator (14 days ahead for written/online exams, 30 days for skills exams).
  5. Pass the Firefighter I written or online exam with 70% for state (non-accredited) certification; also pass the skills test for a Pro Board-accredited certificate.
  6. Your chief or training officer submits a Request for Certification.

Training and exam

Training: No state certification or training law applies to all firefighters; the fire chief or training officer decides the training required. For certification, you train to the Wyoming Firefighter I standard and complete its Training Record. The 2019-edition Firefighter standards end December 31, 2026; the 2024 (NFPA 1010) standards replace them. Candidates must complete all certification requirements within the current edition of the NFPA standard being tested (exceptions only by the Certification Office), so anyone working on the 2019-edition standard should finish before it ends.

Exam: Certification exams are written or online multiple-choice tests (two hours) graded by the DFPES Certification Office; you need 70%. You may retest 30 days after your last written exam, with no limit on attempts. A skills test, scored pass/fail on performance competencies, is required only for the Pro Board-accredited certificate. Departments may instead use the new FFI/HMA/HMO test booklet method, which must be completed within 18 months.

How long it takes

Written exam retests are allowed 30 days after the last attempt. The test booklet method must be finished within 18 months of the first test date.

Keeping your certification

Renewal: The DFPES prerequisites document lists no renewal requirement for Firefighter I. Some higher certifications (for example Hazmat Technician and Incident Safety Officer) renew with continuing hours of education, submitted 30 to 60 days before expiration.

Good to know in Wyoming

Coming from another state: If you join a Wyoming fire service organization with prior certifications, your chief or training officer can request reciprocity. DFPES may approve it if your certificate is dated within the past 5 years and has a Pro Board, Department of Defense or IFSAC seal (or you are active military) and matches the NFPA edition Wyoming has adopted. If denied, you can challenge test by passing the written exam and having a completed training record for the skills test.

Not yet on a department: Candidates who finish an approved Firefighter II program without a Wyoming department get a certificate of completion that expires within 2 years. If you join a Wyoming department before then, it can request your Wyoming Firefighter II certification.

State vs. Pro Board certificate: A written exam (70%) plus a training record earns a state non-accredited certificate. Adding the skills test earns a state accredited certificate, with seal numbers sent to Pro Board's national registry.
