The Most-Searched U.S. Citizenship Test Answers, Explained
Written & reviewed by the Quibank editorial team · · Editorial standards
Every month, thousands of people search Google for the answer to a single civics question — 'how many amendments does the Constitution have?', 'when do we celebrate Independence Day?', 'what is the name of my U.S. representative?'. Here are the official answers to the most-searched questions, each with a short explanation so the answer sticks instead of just being memorized.
One thing to know first: there are two versions of the test — the 2008 version (100 questions) and the 2025 version (128 questions). Which one you take depends on when you filed your Form N-400. The answers below hold on both versions, but the question counts and the phrasing of some items differ. And remember the test is oral, in English — understand the answer in any language, but practice saying it in English.
How many amendments does the Constitution have?
Twenty-seven (27). The first ten are called the Bill of Rights and protect basic freedoms like speech and religion. The 27th, the most recent, was ratified in 1992. On the test, the answer to say is simply 'twenty-seven (27)'.
When do we celebrate Independence Day?
July 4. It marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the colonies declared independence from Great Britain. This one fact actually answers several test questions: when Independence Day is celebrated, when the Declaration was adopted, and which country the United States declared independence from (Great Britain).
What is the name of your U.S. representative?
This is the question that confuses people most, because it has no single answer — it depends on where you live. Everyone lives in a congressional district, and each district elects one member of the House of Representatives to a two-year term. At your interview, you answer with the representative of YOUR district, whoever holds the seat that day.
To find yours, go to house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative and enter your ZIP code. Write the name down and practice saying it in English. The same goes for your two senators (senate.gov) and your governor — these are personal answers no generic list on the internet can give you reliably.
Other short answers people search constantly
- What is the supreme law of the land? — The Constitution.
- What are the first three words of the Constitution? — 'We the People'.
- How many U.S. senators are there? — One hundred (100): two per state, elected for six years.
- How many voting members are in the House of Representatives? — Four hundred thirty-five (435).
- Who signs bills to become laws? — The President.
- What is the capital of the United States? — Washington, D.C.
Watch out for answers that change over time
Some test answers aren't fixed: the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, your senators, and your governor all change with elections. At the interview you answer with whoever is in office THAT day. Any answer list you find online — including this one — can go stale on those questions, so verify them on uscis.gov and the official pages shortly before your interview.
In our free practice tool you can pick your state so the state-specific questions show your actual officials, study each question in Chinese or Spanish to understand it, then drill it out loud in English — which is exactly what the officer will ask of you.
