How to pass the citizenship test

The civics test is an oral test in English — the officer asks and you answer out loud. The questions and answers are public, but you need to understand the question in English and say the answer. Here's an efficient study plan.

1

Confirm your version first

Use your N-400 filing date to know whether you take the 2025 (128) or 2008 (100) version, and study only that pool.

2

Build memory with flashcards

Go through every question in Flashcards mode; understand it first, then memorize the key words of the English answer. Mark the hard ones “review.”

3

Practice listening and pronunciation

Tap “Listen” on each question and repeat aloud. At the interview you must understand the officer's spoken English.

4

Take mock tests repeatedly

Use Quiz mode to simulate the real interview: random questions, answer aloud first, then check. Pass consistently before you go.

5

Handle time-sensitive and state questions

President, VP, and Speaker change with elections; your senators, governor, and capital depend on your state. Pick your state in settings and verify on the official page before your interview.

On interview day

  • Relax and listen to the full question before answering; you may ask “Could you repeat that, please?”
  • Answer time-sensitive questions with whoever is in office that day.
  • Once you reach the passing score, the officer stops asking — you pass on the spot.
